The NAB Education Foundation (NABEF) revealed the winners of its 10th annual Service to America Awards on Thursday. Winners will be honored at the Celebration of Service to America Awards dinner June 9 in Washington, DC, recognizing outstanding community service by local broadcasters.
"The remarkable public service commitment demonstrated by radio and television broadcasters across America embodies the true meaning and spirit of localism," said NAB President/CEO David Rehr. "We are proud to recognize the efforts of this year's Service to America honorees, and we salute them for their dedication to serving the public interest."
This year's Service to America Awards honor Hubbard Radio's KSTP-FM/Minneapolis for the annual "KS95 for Kids Radiothon," which raised more than $912,000 in 2007. The awards also honor broadcasters for outstanding service in the face of natural disasters, as in the case of WYCT/Pensacola, FL, for its "Letters from Home" campaign. In just three days, the station received more than 14,000 letters for troops overseas.
Additionally, the awards recognize broadcasters and their corporate or community partners for exemplary public service, such as Omni Broadcasting's annual 24-hour "Radiothon to End Child Abuse." In 2007, Omni stations provided free airtime valued at $276,000 and raised over $220,000.
