After 52 years of radio broadcasts, Westwood One is ending distribution of Larry King. The syndication firm has told King's affiliates that it will no longer feed Larry King after New Year's eve. King has been on national radio since May 1, 1957. Beginning January 1, WWI will fill King's previous slot with a repeat of the "Fred Thompson Show."
The network told affiliates that Thompson's "appeal and demographics are inline with those of Larry King" and that his show is "produced exclusively for radio" as compared with King, which is simply a simulcast of his CNN Show TV show.
Mutual Broadcasting System added King and his overnight show in 1978 which topped out at over 500 affiliates. In 1994, King, gave up his radio show at Mutual (now Westwood One) and in favor of a night simulcast of his TV show.
