Longtime WGY-AM/Albany, NY, morning host Don Weeks announced Tuesday that he will be ending his broadcast career when his current contract ends later this year. "I've decided not to renew my contract and retire from radio. It has been a great run but I want time now to pursue some other interests including gardening, fly fishing, painting and I may even write a book."
Weeks has been host of WGY's morning show for 30 years and has been broadcasting for 50 years in the region. In 2009, he was inducted in New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame and he is a recipient of the National Association of Broadcaster's prestigious Marconi Award.
"We're all so happy for Don. He's earned the right to pursue some of the finer things in life," said WGY Director/News and Programming Chuck Custer. "He's an icon, a mentor and a friend."
VP/Market Manager Kristen Delaney added, "Don has enjoyed a long and brilliant career broadcasting in the Capital Region. He deserves to spend more time pursuing his other interests and we will truly miss Don when he wraps up his remarkable career."
No decision has been made yet on when Weeks' final shows will be broadcast. Said Custer, "Someone will succeed Don, but no one will ever replace him. We're very grateful Don has given us plenty of time to find our next host."
