Annual Kellar Radio Talent Institute Begins
RADIO ONLINE | Tuesday, May 31, 2016 |
Beasley Broadcast Group CFO Caroline Beasley and President Bruce Beasley both opened the first day of the Kellar Radio Talent Institute Tuesday on the campus of Appalachian State University in North Carolina. Caroline and Bruce were preceded by opening comments from Chancellor Sheri Everts, Dean Glenda Treadaway and Department Chair Jean DeHart.
The ten day immersion in all things radio includes sessions taught by broadcast professionals in his or her area of expertise, including programming, on-air, sports, news, talk, digital and social media, production, promotions, voice work, writing and sales with students receiving their Radio Marketing Professionals Certification from the RAB.
The sessions are led by over 40 radio pros from broadcast groups in the state and region and are held on the ASU campus, except for one day when we'll travel to Charlotte, where Doug Rice and his team from Performance Racing Network at Charlotte Motor Speedway, then to Bank of America Stadium where Mick Mixon, play-by-play announcer of the NFL Carolina Panthers, leads the sessions.
Back on campus, the "Ace and TJ" morning show from iHeartMedia's Channel 96.1 in Charlotte will broadcast live from the Institute, with the students being the live studio audience. The students will not only hear the show, but they'll see how it's put together, both when the mic is on and when it isn't. Former Kellar Radio Talent Institute students have started their careers with CBS Radio, Beasley Media Group, Cumulus, Curtis Media, Entercom, iHeartMedia, Alpha Media, Greater Media, Capitol Broadcasting, Blue Ridge Broadcasting, IMG College Network, NASCAR, CNN and others.
Dan Vallie who founded the National Radio Talent System stated, "We have a fun, challenging, and changing industry, we need to embrace all technology to insure we continue to thrive into the 21st century, but the thing that always has and always will make the difference is people. That is why we do this, to find those young people who have a growing passion to be in the business, to connect them to the industry and the industry to them."
