Apple Confirms it Will Acquire Shazam App, Company
RADIO ONLINE | Monday, December 11, 2017 |
Apple has agreed to acquire Shazam, an app that can identify music, movies, advertising and television shows from short audio samples, the company confirmed on Monday. The deal is reportedly worth $400 million, according to Recode. "We are excited to announce that Shazam has entered into an agreement to become part of Apple," said Shazam in a statement. "Shazam is one of the highest rated apps in the world and loved by hundreds of millions of users and we can't imagine a better home for Shazam to enable us to continue innovating and delivering magic for our users."
Apple could integrate the app and its features -- which has over one billion downloads -- into the Apple Music subscription service. Shazam can also be a powerful link between radio and on-demand listening, as it allows users to easily identify a song, or other audio.
The acquisition should close in the coming weeks, pending regulatory approval.
