NAB Backs 'Moment of Silence' for Slain Journalists

NAB
NAB

The National Association of Broadcasters is supporting a moment of silence in broadcast newsrooms this Thursday in support of the five victims slain last week at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, MD. The trade group joins the American Society of News Editors and The Associated Press Media Editors in asking journalists around the globe to join the Baltimore Sun Media Group's moment of silence Thursday at 2:33pm Thursday.

It was a week ago Thursday at 2:33pm when a gunman with a shotgun opened fire and killed Capital Gazette reporter Wendi Winters, sales assistant Rebecca Smith, editor Robert Hiaasen, editorial writer Gerald Fischman and reporter and editor John McNamara.

"We stand with our print reporter colleagues in remembrance of five individuals who gave their lives in support of a great calling -- quality local journalism," said NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith. "We ask broadcast journalists across America to consider joining in this solemn moment of reflection."

The moment of silence is not for on-air but intended to be observed in broadcast newsrooms and spent in contemplation, prayer or reflection.
