Colts Announcer Lamey Retires After Using Racial Slur
RADIO ONLINE | Thursday, August 23, 2018 |
The Indianapolis Colts have announced the retirement of 44-year radio announcer -- and play-by-play voice of the Indianapolis Colts -- Bob Lamey on Sunday, August 18 after he was accused of using a racial slur in an off-the-air conversation. A report from WTHR.com published late Tuesday claimed an Emmis employee heard the comment and reported it to the human resources department, which then contacted the Colts about the situation. Lamey issued a statement acknowledging the use of an "inappropriate word" when he told a story to a friend.
The Colts said in statement from the team's COO Pete Ward that said Lamey "promptly retired" after the incident. "First and foremost, the Colts deplore and do not tolerate the use of any racial slur - in any context. While it's our long-standing company policy not to make public comments on personnel matters, Bob publicly acknowledged that last week he repeated an inappropriate word when telling a story. He immediately apologized to the people who heard him use the word, and then promptly retired."
"Bob has a long and storied history in our community, but he made a serious mistake. We are deeply disappointed the incident took place and offer our sincerest regrets to all who were impacted by Bob's lapse in judgement."
Matt Taylor will call play-by-play for the Colts during the interim.
