To honor the life and career of late Senator John McCain, the Salem Radio Network's twin 24-hour news services -- SRN News and Townhall News -- are honoring the Arizona Republican and former 2008 GOP candidate for President with a week-long special series entitled "John McCain: American Maverick" beginning Monday, August 27th. Senator McCain's family announced on Friday, August 24 that at his request, medical treatment for his aggressive brain cancer had been discontinued. He died on Saturday at age 81.

SRN VP/News & Talk Programming series Tom Tradup said, "From his legendary military service to his ongoing courageous battle with glioblastoma, John McCain has inspired America as a fighter. Our week-long special series features observations from some of Senator McCain's admirers as well as his detractors... each of whom acknowledge that-now that he has passed-his place in history will be assured."

In one segment, former Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth -- who unsuccessfully challenged McCain for the U.S. Senate in the 2010 Arizona Republican primary -- offered high praise for his onetime foe:

"I was an opponent of John McCain's. But I would ask people to remember his tenacity and his courage during the time he was a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton." Hayworth added, "Admiration does not necessarily confer agreement. But I believe we should be of one accord that John McCain occupied-and his legacy will occupy-several pages in the metaphysical book of American history."
