SportsRadio 94 WIP Ends the Wing Bowl After 26 Years
RADIO ONLINE | Wednesday, October 31, 2018 |
WIP (SportsRadio 94)/Philadelphia has announced that it's ending the Wing Bowl after 26 years. The popular eating competition featured participants stuffing their faces with chicken wings flanked by the Wingettes in front of thousands of onlookers. "This was the right time to go out," said Program Director Spike Eskin during the announcement on Angelo Cataldi's morning program Tuesday. He noted that the February, 2018 Wing Bowl turned the promotion that began in 1993 into an all-out pep rally.
Philadelphia Market Manager David Yadgaroff said it was simply a logical time to do so. But several sources told the Philadelphia Business News they believe there could have been other factors in play, including Cataldi not being a big fan of the event, as well as Entercom being concerned about legal liability and costs.
Previously held annually the Friday before the Super Bowl, PBN says the Wing Bowl was the brainchild of WIP morning co-host Al Morganti, who thought frustrated Eagles fans needed something to root for that time of year since their team had failed to win the Super Bowl for so long. The first Wing Bowl was held in Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel lobby in 1993 with 150 people in attendance and just two competitors.
"With the Eagles winning the Super Bowl, the pretense for holding the event doesn't exist anymore," added Yadgaroff.
