RADIO ONLINE | Tuesday, November 5, 2019 |
iHeartMedia's WWPR-FM (Power 105.1)/New York afternoon host Angie Martinez said in a social media post Monday morning that she had sustained "severe" injuries in a car accident, and would be off the air for an unspecified period of time, reports Newsday's Verne Gay. In the Twitter post Bronx-born Martinez, 48, said she had "a fractured lumbar and shattered vertebrae" then added, "I'm recovering and will be for some time, but I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to do that."
In a statement, iHeartMedia spokeswoman Angel Aristone said, "Angie is an important part of the iHeart family and we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery. We don't have anything else to share at this time." Aristone said "We will have other on air talent and guests filling in, in the interim."
In her tweet posted just before 7:30am Monday, Martinez wrote, "I've always believed in angels and mine was with me the other morning."
Prior to joining WWPR in June, 2014, Martinez worked for crosstown Emmis' WQHT-FM (Hot 97). During her 20 years with Emmis, Martinez was named "Outstanding On-Air Broadcast Personality or Team" by the New York State Broadcasters Association in 2012 and "Outstanding On-Air Broadcast Personality" in 2011. Earlier this year, she was nominated to the Radio Hall of Fame in the Active Local/Regional category.
