iHeartMedia's WDIA/Memphis congratulates Bobby O'Jay for his upcoming induction to the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, an honor given to a special group of people who have led their stations and their communities, leaving a legacy of impact behind. O'Jay will officially be inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame on July 31 at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center in Murfreesboro, TN.
Originally from Batesville, MS, O'Jay first got his start in Montgomery, AL and from there went on to Milwaukee, Houston, Dallas and Chicago, before landing his dream job in February, 1983 in Memphis.
"Bobby O'Jay is so deserving of this honor," said iHeartMedia Memphis and Tupelo Market President Kevin Klein. "It makes me so proud that his 38 years of talking to the Memphis community on WDIA are finally recognized. WDIA is a station rich in history and a staple to the Black community. Congrats Bobby for all you have done for Memphis."
O'Jay has been a fixture on WDIA since 1983 as both an outspoken air personality and Program Director of the station. WDIA is the first radio station in America that was programmed entirely by African Americans for African Americans. Many music legends got their start by working at WDIA, including B.B. King and Rufus Thomas.
"Bobby O'Jay's impact on our industry is undeniable," said iHeartMedia Memphis Senior Vice President of Programming Sue Purnell. "He's an absolute champion when it comes to our community, and we're overjoyed to see Bobby join The Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame."
O'Jay is the fourth personality to be inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, joining legendary broadcasters such as Rufus Thomas, Nat D. Williams and Bev Johnson.
