FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has proposed a new rule that would do away with broadcast cross-ownership rules, while leaving in place local market ownership caps reports Broadcasting & Cable's John Eggerton. This would preserve the FCC's prior loosening of the cross-ownership rule, passed under Republican FCC Chairman Kevin Martin allowing TV and newspapers to join in the top 20 markets.
The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), may be voted without being on a public agenda meeting, according to the publication's source, which reveals there are apparently at least three votes for it. The final order will likely be scheduled for that public vote sometime next year, after a notice and comment period.
