Radio Show Features Latest In-Vehicle Technology

The 2017 Radio Show Marketplace will feature a 2017 Ford Focus demonstrating the top three solutions for linking a driver's smartphone with their auto dash. These include SmartDeviceLink (SDL) -- a neutral platform that works for all top smartphone models, CarPlay -- Apple's link for iPhones and Android Auto -- Google's link for Android phones. The Radio Show, held September 5-8 in Austin, is produced by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB).

SmartDeviceLink is an open-source automotive solution originally developed by Ford Motor Company. Commonly referred to as SDL, the technology allows drivers to connect their smartphone to the car, integrating mobile applications for in-vehicle control. The technology is available in over 10 million Ford vehicles, including a majority of the company's 2017 models. Adopted by Toyota and others, SDL makes it possible for any automotive original equipment manufacturer to retain branding and simplifies the integration of applications and content in vehicles.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also allow passengers to connect their smartphone to the car, but are mobile operating system specific. CarPlay works only with iPhone 5 and higher. Android Auto works only with Android phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. These platforms bring the look and feel of the driver's mobile phone to the car dashboard. In addition to full phone function, standard and popular third-party applications such as messaging, maps and media are included.

"These demonstrations will showcase the range of entertainment options available in vehicles today and provide insight on what's being developed for the future," said NAB Executive VP/Radio John David. "Attendees will also learn the role the SmartDeviceLink technology plays in maintaining radio's presence and accessibility in the car."

Also, the Radio Show's opening session, titled "The Connected Car Listener Experience," will explore in-depth the impact of the digital dash on radio and what it portends for the future.
