Edison Study: Smart Speaker Owners Five Years Later

Edison Research
Edison Research

In 2017, NPR and Edison Research went into the homes of smart speaker owners to learn how the new technology was being integrated into people's lives for the original Smart Audio Report. Five years later, Edison Research revisited some of those same families to see how they have grown and how their usage of voice assistant technology has changed.

The graphic below from Edison Research's Share of Ear report shows what Americans are listening to on their smart speakers. These devices have made all types of audio content easily accessible in homes.

Fresh data from the latest Smart Audio Report and stories from the latest round of in-depth interviews will show how access to media is one of the many reasons people in the U.S. are embracing voice assistant technology.

The 2022 installment of the Smart Audio Report will offer an update on some of those original families, but also fresh data from a recent national study that measures attitudes around voice tech among those who use it and those who don't. This report is derived from a national quantitative survey and analysis of in-depth, one-on-one interviews. It also includes tracking data from Edison Research's Share of Ear study, measuring the daily listening habits of Americans using a 24-hour diary.

Join National Public Media VP of Sponsorship Marketing Lamar Johnson and Edison Research Vice President Megan Lazovick on Thursday, June 16 at 2pm ET for a live webinar presentation of the findings from The Smart Audio Report 2022. Click here to register.
