WURN/Key Largo Improves Reach with MaxxCasting HD Signal

WURN-FM (Exitos 107), operated by Actualidad Media Group out of Key Largo, FL will substantially improve its broadcast signal and audience reach into the Miami market utilizing a MaxxCasting system from GeoBroadcast Solutions in the late spring. The one-node single-frequency network (SFN), with an HD Radio system will provide the station with an interference-free transmission and more robust contour to help it extend to an additional 784,000 potential listeners, roughly 142 percent more than its current reach.

The station was launched in 2014 and has been reaching the bottom contour of the Miami market with considerable success. In exploring potential solutions to reach a larger audience, President Adib Eden, and VP/General Manager Jose Zerpa traveled to several MaxxCasting stations in the northeast to learn about the economic and technological advantages the system can provide. Speaking to personnel at stations WKVB-FM and WXLO-FM the pair learned how each were able to improve their reach and monetize MaxxCasting.

"We have been impressed with what MaxxCasting has done for other stations and are eager to implement the system at WURN as part of our investments to improve and increase the reach of the station," said Eden.

Zerpa said WURN had recently built a new tower and installed an improved transmitter, but he sees MaxxCasting as enabling the station to stretch above its current contour and better reach a larger portion of the Miami market.

"We have been working with the engineers at GeoBroadcast to ensure that the node is placed strategically to provide a more robust signal with a seamless transmission into the metropolitan area," said Zerpa.

MaxxCasting combines radio and cellular technology with patented designs that enable FM broadcasters to enhance their signals with the deployment of a strategically located cluster of low to the ground, highly directionalized synchronized booster sites. MaxxCasting allows broadcasters to deliver easy to receive signals that reach a broader portion of their service area and supports the accurate decoding of Nielsen PPM watermark to aid in accurate audience measurement.

"WURN's present signal extends greatly off the shores of Florida's east coast," said GeoBroadcast Solutions CRO Paul Littleton. "The new MaxxCasting system will help the station reach a larger part of the service area that presently does not have clear access to its signal."
