President Biden's FCC nominee Anna Gómez was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee and has advanced to Senate floor despite protests from Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz and eight other Republicans. The move brings the Democrats one step closer to having a majority on the Commission for the first time in Biden's presidency. The Democrats hold a 14-13 majority on the Senate Commerce Committee.

Gomez has been with the U.S. State Department since January as senior adviser for International Information and Communications Policy. Previously, she was a deputy assistant secretary at the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) from 2009 to 2023.

"Ms. Gomez is a dedicated public servant with 25 years of experience in the telecom industry," said Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WW). "Ms. Gomez has demonstrated she has the experience and judgment to be highly effective in this role as commissioner and earned bipartisan support for her nomination,"

The Commerce Committee today also approved the FCC re-nominations of Democrat Geoffrey Starks and Republican Brendan Carr. Starks has been on the FCC since 2019 and Carr since 2017.
