Colorado Public Radio announced that longtime Morning Edition host Mike Lamp will retire Friday, September 12, concluding a journalism career that has spanned more than four decades in both radio and television. Lamp has been a familiar voice for CPR listeners since 2000, guiding early-morning audiences with his calm reporting and steady presence.
His path to journalism began in high school when he joined the student newspaper, but he soon found himself drawn to broadcasting. A powerful moment early in his studies -- hearing Herb Morrison's famous "Oh, the humanity!" account of the Hindenburg disaster-cemented his passion for the medium.
Lamp's first paid job was an overnight shift at a Country outlet in Flagstaff, AZ. From there, he built a career across commercial radio, television, and public broadcasting, including nearly four years at KNAU in Flagstaff before joining CPR in 2000.
Over the past 25 years in Colorado, Lamp has anchored coverage of some of the state's most difficult and defining moments, from the September 11 attacks to the Aurora theater shooting and devastating wildfires. "I have felt good about being someone who wasn't panicked, who was able to say how things were and not necessarily more than that," Lamp said. "You hope that you are a voice of stability and the opposite of panicking or frantic."
Kevin Dale, executive editor of CPR News, praised Lamp's style: "His steady, calm, authoritative voice welcomed listeners into the day for 25 years. He is curious, understands how people might need to be eased into the day and, even so, when the news demanded it, he was powerful and to the point. That combination of skills is rare. We'll miss him, and we know our listeners will too."
Colorado Public Radio will air a special tribute to Lamp during Morning Edition on his final day, Friday, September 12.
