Kathy O'Connell, longtime host at WXPN/Philadelphia, has announced her retirement after more than four decades at the University of Pennsylvania AAA outlet, bringing an end to the Peabody Award-winning "Kids Corner." The program's final shows are scheduled to air in June.
O'Connell shared the news on-air, with WXPN also publishing interviews featuring O'Connell, "Kids Corner" producer Robert Drake and General Manager Roger LaMay reflecting on the show's legacy and impact.
Since its debut, "Kids Corner" has been a staple for generations of listeners, blending music and conversation tailored to children while resonating with families over time. Drake compared the show's influence to that of Fred Rogers, noting its lasting connection with audiences as they grew up and continued to value the program into adulthood.
LaMay said the show's multigenerational reach is evident at station events, where former young listeners now attend with their own children. He also highlighted O'Connell's distinctive ability to engage young audiences, creating meaningful and memorable conversations.
WXPN plans to commemorate O'Connell's career and the legacy of "Kids Corner" in the coming months with special programming and outreach events leading up to the show's conclusion.
