Longtime Rochester radio personality Scott Spezzano will retire from WBZA (98.9 The Buzz) at the end of the year, concluding a 50-year broadcasting career. Spezzano announced Thursday that his final appearance as co-host of "The Breakfast Buzz" will be December 18, a date that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the start of his radio career.
"Radio's been, basically, my entire life," Spezzano said on the show. "I started doing this when I was 15 years old."
Spezzano, who turns 65 on December 5, has been paired with co-host Sandy Waters since 1999. The two spent 15 years hosting mornings on WPXY (98 PXY) before moving to sister WBZA in 2014. Waters will remain with the show following Spezzano's departure.
Spezzano said he has no specific plans for retirement but wants to spend more time with his family, including his 7-year-old daughter.
"Truly, honestly, Scotty, you have touched so many of us," Waters told her longtime co-host. "You have done more than you even realize."
Spezzano said he intends to make the most of his remaining weeks on the air rather than treat them as an extended farewell. "We've got about 57 shows left together, and I want those 57 shows to be fun," he said.
