Westwood One's conservative radio and podcast host Michael Savage announced on Wednesday during his syndicated "The Savage Nation" program that he'll exit the airwaves in favor of podcasting, effective January, 2021. He also made the announcement on Twitter. The 78-year-old said in his post: "Too many Chris Wallace types took over radio -- only vanilla permitted."

Savage's radio career began on KGO/San Francisco in 1994 and he entered syndication in the fall of 2000, when "The Savage Nation" was distributed by Talk Radio Network. He left TRN in September, 2012 and later entered a deal to be syndicated by Cumulus Media Networks, before it merged with Westwood One in 2013.

Earlier this year, Savage was appointed by President Donald Trump to the board of directors of the Presidio Trust for a term expiring May 4, 2023. Along with the National Park Service, the Presidio Trust manages the Presidio of San Francisco, the former military fort that is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Savage also holds a doctorate in ethnobotanical research from the University of California and both a Master of Science in botany and a Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The United Nations has recognized his research, which includes a master plan for greening the U.S. as well as work on Native American trial folk medicine.
