Stations Drop Morgan Wallen Over Use of Racial Slur
RADIO ONLINE | Wednesday, February 3, 2021 |
A number of radio outlets are dropping Country recording artist Morgan Wallen after a video surfaced of him using a racial slur. Wallen currently has the number one album in the U.S. with "Dangerous: The Double Album." The video, which was reportedly recorded by a neighbor in Nashville, shows Wallen greeting friends and referring to one of them as the n-word.
Wallen told TMZ, who first published the video, that he was "embarrassed and sorry." "I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back," he added. "There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better."
In light of the video emerging, Cumulus Media is "requesting that all of Morgan Wallen's music be removed from our playlists without exception."
An Entercom spokesperson said, "In light of Morgan Wallen's recent use of a racial slur, we've discussed the incident with our Country brand leadership team and together have made the decision to remove Morgan's music from Entercom's playlists."
iHeartRadio is also pulling the plug on airing the disgraced country artist's music after his use of the racial slur.
Streaming services are also taking action, according to the BBC, who report that Wallen's music has been removed from Spotify's country playlist "Hot Country Songs," and the Apple Music's "Today's Country."
TMZ now reports that Big Loud -- an independent label based in Nashville -- said, "In the wake of recent events, Big Loud Records has made the decision to suspend Morgan Wallen's contract indefinitely." They go on to say Republic Records -- which distributes his music -- is fully onboard too, adding, "such behavior will not be tolerated."
