iHeartPodcasts and journalist Jemele Hill have unveiled "SPOLITICS," a new podcast that will explore the intersection of sports, race, gender, sexuality and politics. The program aims to foster critical conversations about the cultural and political dynamics within the sports world, engaging with athletes, sports figures and political leaders to challenge mainstream narratives on these complex issues.
Hosted by Hill, "SPOLITICS" provides commentary, discussions and interviews with prominent personalities. Early guests include sports personality Dan Le Batard, former NFL player LeSean McCoy, Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Topics like immigration, reproductive rights, affordable housing and gender equity will be central themes in the weekly episodes.
In the first episode, set to air on October 17, Hill will speak with Dan Le Batard about his career, the influence of his upbringing as the child of Cuban exiles, and how it shaped his political views. The episode will also feature a discussion with Bill Rhoden, author of Forty Million Dollar Slaves, tracing the long history of the intersection of sports and politics in the U.S.
"I'm very excited to join iHeartPodcasts during this critical time in American politics," said Hill. "Sports and politics have always been connected, and on this podcast, I'll explore that deep connection with important newsmakers and smart people. The goal is to use the unifying element of sports to help people better understand that politics touches every corner of our lives."
Jemele Hill is well-known for her 20-plus-year career in journalism, including her time at ESPN, where she gained prominence as a columnist, television host, and podcaster. Beyond her work in sports media, Hill has expanded into television production and is currently producing a documentary on Colin Kaepernick, directed by Spike Lee, and developing a comedy series with Gabrielle Union.
"SPOLITICS" will premiere on October 17, with new episodes released every Thursday.
