Jed "The Fish" Gould, a cornerstone of Los Angeles radio, passed away early Monday reports Variety. He was 69. Gould, who aired on KROQ-FM in Los Angeles for over three decades, died following a recent diagnosis of lung cancer. He began his career at KROQ in 1978 and became known for championing punk rock, alternative, and new wave music long before the genres gained mainstream recognition. His tenure at KROQ lasted until 2012 as an afternoon personality.
Megan Holiday, a current KROQ host and close friend, remembered Gould fondly. "He is one of the kindest, funniest, and the most unique people that I've ever met," she said. "He had an infectious energy that could light up an arena. I just loved him very much and was grateful for the time we got to spend together."
Following his time at KROQ, Gould continued to influence the airwaves at KCSN, a noncommercial station operated by California State Northridge, and had brief stints at KLOS and a return to KROQ on its HD2 "Roq of the '80s" channel. His contributions to radio were recognized with multiple accolades, including the Billboard Modern Rock Personality of the Year award twice, and the Radio & Records Local Modern Rock Personality of the Year.
On his LinkedIn page, Gould reflected on his career: "My decades at KROQ are the core of my radio experience. We were leading the way but had no idea... Any music lover who grew up in SoCal will tell you KROQ was their buddy for much or most of their lives."
Gould's earlier career included positions at KIQQ, KEZY, and KORG, with brief stops at Modern Rock KQAK and AOR KRQR in San Francisco.
