What began as a local celebration of Houston pride transformed into a far-reaching relief effort this year, as KKBQ (93Q) and its sister stations joined forces with Kroger and The Salvation Army on 7-1-3 Day to support flood victims in Central Texas.
Marking July 13 -- a date that nods to Houston's 713 area code -- 93Q expanded its annual Operation Hydration drive to include aid for communities in Kerr County and the surrounding Hill Country areas, still reeling from devastating floods earlier this month.
Broadcasting live from the Kroger Marketplace at Grand Parkway and Morton Ranch in Katy, 93Q and Radio One's Houston stations (KBXX, KGLK, and KMJQ) collected over 42,000 pounds of bottled water and critical supplies such as hygiene products, diapers, pet food, and cleaning materials.
"Houston is known for having a big heart and a deep love for our fellow Houstonians, and our fellow Texans," said Lo Sessions-Barker, Assistant Program Director and afternoon host at 93Q. "This year, we wanted to make sure that love extended to our neighbors in the Texas Hill Country. That's what 7-1-3 Day is all about - community, compassion, and showing up for each other."
Kroger's "Round-Up Relief at the Register" campaign complemented the effort, allowing shoppers across Texas to round up their purchases to support flood relief. The Salvation Army partnered to distribute the collected goods and funds directly to families in need.
