WKOY Lets Listeners Pick New Morning Show Successor

Classic Rock WKOY (100.9 The Eagle) in Bluefield-Princeton is turning to its audience to help determine the station's next morning show following the retirement of the long-running John Boy & Billy program.

Working with Radio Consulting Services owner and consultant Jon Holiday, the station has launched "The Morning Show Playoffs," a listener-driven competition designed to fill one of radio's most important dayparts by popular vote.

Rather than selecting a replacement internally, listeners are being invited to hear and evaluate three nationally syndicated morning shows -- Westwood One's The Bob & Tom Show, benztown's The Todd N Tyler Empire, and G Networks' Woody & Wilcox -- before voting for their favorite.

Bob Spencer, co-owner of First Media Services, said the approach reflects the company's listener-first philosophy. "Instead of making a decision behind closed doors, we're giving our audience a real voice," Spencer said. "This station belongs to its listeners, and their input matters."

Holiday noted that replacing a show like John Boy & Billy involves more than filling airtime. "It leaves a connection gap with the audience," he said. "The smartest move was to let listeners tell us who they want to wake up with. The Morning Show Playoffs gives them that voice."

According to station leadership, the competition has been rolled out in stages with featured content from each show, encouraging repeat listening and discussion. Listener voting is now underway, with the winning morning show set to be announced in the coming days.
