WHUR Personality Angela Stribling Dies After Cancer Battle

Longtime Washington broadcaster, singer and television host Angela Stribling has died following a two-year battle with brain cancer. The longtime WHUR-FM (96.3) personality died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 26, according to her husband, Ken Washington, Ph.D.

"It is with broken heart that I share that my beloved wife, Angela Marie Stribling passed away peacefully at home," Washington said. He and Stribling's sister, Darlene, were by her side. A Celebration of Life will be held in Washington, DC, with details to be announced.

Stribling was a longtime fixture at WHUR and became the first woman to host the station's "Original Quiet Storm," the format launched at Howard University in 1976 by the late Melvin Lindsey.

Stribling and Lindsey were also close friends and professional collaborators. They hosted BET's "Screen Scene" together and co-hosted "On Time" on WJZ-TV in Baltimore.

Her television career included four years hosting "Screen Scene" at BET. She later helped launch BET Jazz, where she hosted "Jazz Central" alongside Ramsey Lewis and Lou Rawls, as well as "BET Jazz Discovery" and "BET Jazz Scene." She also worked as a reporter for "Evening Magazine" in Baltimore.

Stribling began her broadcasting career in Washington as a news intern at WTTG-TV and worked at WOL-AM before joining WHUR. She later hosted WHUR's "Pillow Talk," a late-night program combining music with conversations about relationships and life.

Beyond broadcasting, Stribling was a classically trained jazz vocalist who performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and Africa and shared stages with artists including Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. Her career also included acting and national voiceover work.

"Angela Stribling was a remarkable talent, but what made her truly special was the person she was," said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater. "Her voice was beautiful, her presence was calming, and her spirit was genuine."

"Angela was part of the WHUR family, and her loss is deeply felt by all of us," Plater added. "We will remember her not only for the incredible career she built, but for the love, kindness and light she shared with so many people."
