WTOP/Washington, DC, was awarded two National Headliner Awards, including first place for Best Newscast for its coverage the day of the Congressional Baseball Shooting in June, 2017. WTOP's national security correspondent, J.J. Green Radio won third place in the radio stations news series category for his investigative work in uncovering "Anatomy of a Russian Attack," an in-depth look at what the U.S. Intelligence community has concluded was an attempt by Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

"We feel so honored to be recognized for our efforts to bring breaking news coverage to the nation's capital at the moments when it matters the most," said WTOP's Director of News and Programming Mike McMearty.

The awards were announced to WTOP employees online at HeadlinerAwards.org on April 13. Every year the National Headliner Awards are given to outstanding writers, photographers, daily newspapers, magazines, graphic artists, radio and television stations and networks, and news syndicates from across the nation.

Last year, WTOP received 42 major awards for excellence in journalism including the National Edward R. Murrow award for overall excellence and an NAB Crystal Award.
