Report: Cumulus Interested in Acquiring WGN-AM/Chicago
RADIO ONLINE | Monday, December 10, 2018 |
Cumulus Media, which owns News/Talk WLS-AM (890), Classic Hits WLS-FM (94.7), Alternative WKQX-FM (101.1) and Rock WLUP-FM in Chicago, could be making a play to acquire Tribune's crosstown News/Talk WGN-AM (720), reports Chicago media columnist Robert Feder. But that's only if the station's incoming owners put it up for sale next year. Nexstar Media Group has agreed to acquire Tribune Media, which includes 42 television stations, WGN America cable network and the standalone radio outlet.
Nextstar is willing to sell WGN-AM, according to Crain's Chicago Business, which said the company has no plans to create a radio portfolio. Feder says that Cumulus President/CEO Mary Berner told its staff in Chicago last week that the company definitely was interested in WGN Radio.
"It's on our radar," one insider told Feder. Also reportedly considered potential buyers of WGN-AM are Hubbard Radio and Entercom Communications.
