WXLO Strengthens Footprint in Boston with MaxxCasting

Cumulus Media has made a $250,000 investment in technology to boost the signal strength of WXLO-FM (104.5)/Worcester, MA. With "Jen & Frank" in mornings and syndicated programs such as "The Adam Bomb Show" and "Fitchburg," WXLO has been airing Hot AC programing across three decades. Now, with MaxxCasting, WXLO has the ability to bring its programming to as many as one million more listeners in the Boston area.

"We're excited that the 450,000+ listeners who tune into 104.5 XLO on a weekly basis, many of whom commute in and out of the City of Boston, will now be able to hear the radio station on their entire commute," said Cumulus Radio Station Group Regional Vice President Bob Goodell. "MaxxCasting has also given us the opportunity to reach new listeners who live in the greater Boston area, giving us the opportunity to expand our footprint."

With MaxxCasting, WXLO can now be heard in downtown Boston and in places east of Route 2 near Lexington and Waltham where reception had previously been spotty. The technology helps boost radio signals in densely populated areas where there are a lot of tall buildings that can cause reception problems. MaxxCasting also has a feature that enables broadcasters to "zone" message, so that they can provide traffic reports, news, and advertising that will only be heard in specific areas.

"Zonecasting" has only been tested in a handful of markets in the U.S. WXLO plans to go live with zonecasting in the near future, after receiving special permission from the FCC.
