Martz Communications' Radio Power unit flipped W297BU/Pittsburgh to "107.3 The Beat" at 11am on Tuesday, with the slogan "Pittsburgh's Old School and Today's R&B," reports Rob Taylor Jr. at the New Pittsburgh Courier. The former WAMO simulcast partner is now playing a mix ranging from Chaka Khan, Gregory Abbott, Prince and De La Soul to Diddy, Usher, New Edition and Notorious B.I.G. The Beat is looking to capitalize on an underserved 25-54 demo that throwback jams of the '80s, '90s and early 2000s appeal to. WAMO's current Hip-Hop format remains on 100.1.
WAMO and 107.3 The Beat GM Jamal Woodson, told the New Pittsburgh Courier in an exclusive interview that, "I've been working hard with programming for the last two years to make this happen." He added, "We get tons of feedback... there was just a void, nothing for the older demographic." Plus, "I love the way it sounds, Babyface, Keith Sweat, Bell Biv Devoe. I love it."
"The Steve Harvey Morning Show," which was part of WAMO's lineup until October, 2018, when it was replaced by "The Breakfast Club," is slatted to return. No date for his debut was confirmed to the Courier. The station is currently playing 10,000 songs in a row commercial free.
The current Quiet Storm show that airs on WAMO each week night will move to 107.3 The Beat, though an exact date has not been determined.
