CPB Names Kimberly Howell Inspector General

The Board of Directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has named Kimberly Howell as CPB's Inspector General, replacing Mary Mitchelson, who retired in April. As Inspector General, Howell will be responsible for promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness, as well as preventing fraud, waste, and mismanagement in CPB programs and operations, through an independent audit and investigative program that covers CPB's internal operations and external grantees. She will begin as CPB Inspector General on October 7.

"I am pleased to have Kimberly Howell take on this important position to ensure that CPB is accountable to the taxpayers that we serve by working to prevent fraud, waste and abuse," said CPB Board Chair Bruce Ramer. "She is an experienced federal executive with extensive leadership experience in investigations, program oversight, compliance and quality assurance."

"I am honored by this appointment and look forward to working with the CPB Board of Directors and the CPB management team to enhance the Corporation's vital role in effectively and efficiently advancing public media in the United States," Howell said.

Howell has been the Deputy Inspector General for Investigations at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority since March 2018 and currently serves as a commissioner on the Commission on Judicial Disabilities for the State of Maryland. Prior to that, she directed the office of investigations for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and served as special agent and Deputy Assistant Inspector General for the Office of Personnel Management. She began her Federal law enforcement career as a special agent with the United States Secret Service in 1993.

She is a Certified Fraud Examiner and holds a bachelor's degree in administration of justice from Howard University, a master of public administration from American Public University and a graduate certificate in Inspector General Leadership from American University. In addition, she is an adjunct assistant professor in the Criminology/Criminal Justice Program at the University of Maryland Global Campus.
