Klobuchar Expresses Strong Support for AM Radio Retention

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) expressed her strong support for the retention of AM Radio in automobiles in an op-ed published in the Brainerd Dispatch. In her resolute backing of the AM For Every Vehicle Act, Senator Klobuchar emphasized that while certain automotive industry leaders might not personally find AM Radio essential, their perspective could change if they were to venture through the rural landscapes of Minnesota.

Highlighting the Act's significance, Senator Klobuchar underlined instances where AM Radio played a pivotal role in public safety and community support. She cited the example of KROX radio's crucial assistance during the flooding incidents in Crookston in both 2021 and 2022. Collaborating closely with the city's Emergency Operations Center, the radio outlet disseminated vital updates about the flooding, including information about road closures and the availability of storm shelters for affected residents.

Senator Klobuchar also asserted that relinquishing aspects of safety, reliable news and cherished aspects of daily life should not be the price paid for the profit motives of certain automobile manufacturers. She concluded her statement by urging a unified effort to pass this legislation, emphasizing its significance in preserving vital communication resources.

The AM for Every Vehicle Act, co-introduced by Senators Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Ted Cruz of Texas, has garnered noteworthy bipartisan backing in the halls of Congress. Moreover, prominent endorsements from the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and several members of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) further underscore the bill's importance.

Following its successful passage through the Senate Commerce Committee, the Act is poised to advance to a broader legislative discussion when the congressional session resumes after the August recess.
