Chicago Public Media Rolls Out Series of Layoffs

Chicago Public Media, parent company of Public Radio WBEZ-FM and the Chicago Sun-Times, has announced significant layoffs affecting 14 staff members across various departments. This move comes two years after the merger of WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times, amidst a worsening financial crisis highlighted by falling fundraising, listenership and philanthropic support. The layoffs coincide with the unveiling of a $6.4 million advanced studio at WBEZ's Navy Pier office and recent pay raises for top executives.

CEO Matt Moog and other leaders explained that the decision was tough but necessary to ensure the organization's long-term sustainability and better serve the community. This includes the closure of the Vocalo radio broadcast, known for its R&B, Hip-Hop and Jazz programming, due to years of declining listenership, set for May 1.

Furthermore, Chicago Public Media will dramatically scale back its podcasting unit, ceasing production of non-newsroom titles like "Nerdette," "Making," and "When Magic Happens," while maintaining some podcasts like those associated with the midday WBEZ program, Reset, and The Rundown, along with Curious City as a weekly feature.

Despite the current challenges, Moog remains hopeful about the merger's future, believing in the strength and potential of the combined organizations to overcome these difficulties by collaborating and sharing resources. However, the financial instability raises concerns about the merger's viability as it enters its third year.
