FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel issued a statement Thursday in response to repeated calls from former President Donald Trump to revoke the licenses of certain broadcast stations. The former president's calls, which he has made for political reasons, prompted Rosenworcel to underscore the importance of protecting free speech under the First Amendment.
"While repeated attacks against broadcast stations by the former President may now be familiar, these threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored," said Rosenworcel. "The FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage."
Rosenworcel reiterated the FCC's commitment to safeguarding free speech and ensuring that broadcast stations operate independently of political pressures. She previously rejected similar calls by Trump to revoke ABC's license following the presidential debate in September. Additionally, she has spoken out against threats from the Florida government aimed at broadcast stations.
This statement highlights the FCC's stance on maintaining the independence of media outlets and ensuring that political figures do not influence broadcast licensing decisions based on content or coverage.
