WABC-AM in New York and its owner, Red Apple Media Chairman John Catsimatidis, were honored with the 2025 Distinguished Service Award by the Fair Media Council during its annual Folio Awards ceremony in New York City. The award recognizes WABC's century-long legacy in broadcasting and its ongoing influence as a leader in News/Talk radio.

Since Catsimatidis acquired the station in March 2020, WABC has seen a significant resurgence and now holds the top spot in national Nielsen ratings among Adults 25+ Average Quarter Hour (AQH), according to the Nielsen Fall 2024 National DMA Dataset.

Accepting the award, Catsimatidis emphasized a return to trusted journalism: "92% of the American people believed what Walter Cronkite said, and I think news has to get back to that situation - and that's what we're doing at WABC."

Red Apple Media President Chad Lopez praised Catsimatidis and his wife Margo for their leadership. "John and Margo Catsimatidis' passion and vision have transformed WABC Radio, driving it to the top of News/Radio and delivering unprecedented growth in record time," said Lopez.

Under Catsimatidis' ownership, WABC has expanded its local news coverage, grown its programming slate, and positioned itself as a champion of the "Save AM Radio" campaign, highlighting the role of AM radio in public safety and emergency communication.

"I am honored to accept the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of WABC Radio, Margo, Chad, and the entire team," Catsimatidis added. "We are committed to common sense, presenting all sides of a story, and letting the listeners decide."

The Fair Media Council Folio Awards are widely regarded as a benchmark of excellence in media, with a rigorous judging process that highlights the most impactful work across the industry.
