Veteran radio personality Mike "Sandman" Sanders, best known for his recent role as Program Director and midday host at SummitMedia Country WZZK/Birmingham, has lost his home and all personal belongings in a devastating fire that swept through Birmingham's South Point district in the early morning hours of October 31.

According to Sanders' sister, Paula, the blaze displaced 19 residents and destroyed multiple homes across two blocks. "My brother, Radio Host Mike 'Sandman' Sanders, was among the 19 people who lost everything in this devastating fire," she wrote. "He literally walked out with the clothes on his back and by the grace of God his life. Nothing at this point is menial in need."

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Sanders recover and replace essential items ranging from clothing and food to furniture and housing needs as he rebuilds his life.

Sanders joined WZZK in May 2024 and served until April 2025, when he was among those affected by company-wide layoffs. A 30-year radio veteran, he previously spent nearly five years at Midwest Communications' WJXA (Mix 92.9)/Nashville as an air personality and talent coach and earlier held programming roles at Saga Communications' WVVR, WRND, and WQEZ in Clarksville, TN. His career has also included stints in Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Denver.

Those wishing to assist Sanders can donate via his family's GoFundMe page at gofund.me.
