AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act Makes Strides in Congress

Legislation that aims to mandate the inclusion of AM radio in all motor vehicles -- the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act -- is progressing through the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill has garnered the necessary support from co-sponsors to move forward in the legislative process. Introduced by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), the measure has successfully attracted 223 co-sponsors since its introduction in May, 2023. The bill is backed by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and various state broadcaster associations.

Among the recent additions to the bill's supporters are Representatives Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Brandon Williams (R-NY), John Rose (R-TN) and Garret Graves (R-LA), reflecting a bipartisan consensus on the issue. The surge in support since February has seen numerous House Members, including Reps Pat Fallon (R-TX), Michael Turner (R-OH), Brian Babin (R-TX) and others, joining as co-sponsors.

On the Senate side, the companion bill spearheaded by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ed Markey (D-MA) is close to achieving a majority, despite previous setbacks due to opposition from Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who seeks to amend the bill to end electric vehicle subsidies.

Should it pass, Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says he is prepared to implement the regulations. Buttigieg has expressed readiness to enforce the law, highlighting the administration's support for the initiative.
