80-year-old Bill Hillgrove, the radio play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Steelers for the past 26 years, has been charged with DUI while driving in Murrysville, PA on Monday, June 15 reports awfulannouncing.com's Sean Keeley. According to the criminal complaint filed by police, Hillgrove crashed through two panes of glass at a store there while parking to pick up a prescription.
Hillgrove allegedly pulled into a parking spot right in front of the store when he kept driving and smashed into it. He then continued into the store to fill a prescription, then got back into his damaged car and left. According to the police report, a witness said Hillgrove was "weaving on the sidewalk" as he left his vehicle.
Police located Hillgrove at home where he admitted he "had a couple beers" and reportedly said "that car just got away from me. I'm telling you that car just got away from me." After a breathalyzer test, he was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.16%, twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania.
A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for August 11.
