KMBY-AM and KMBY-FM/Monterey, CA, President Denise White will host a major celebration on July 22 to mark the 88th birthday of the Classic Hits outlet. The day-long event at the studios in the Bear Flag Building at 651 Cannery Row will run from 9am to 6pm and be open to the public. There will be food, special presentations and appearances by many air personalities, current as well as those who previously worked at the station.
KMBY has a long history of serving the community dating back to 1935 when it launched as KDON. Over the years, the call letters have changed several times, and so has ownership. At one time Bing Crosby was an owner for 33 years. The decision was made by current owners that when KMBY returned to the airwaves it would have the call sign that was used between 1949 and 1978.
"We are proud of the fact that we are the only locally owned radio station in Monterey," stated CEO Chris Edwards. KMBY President Denise White added that the commitment to the local radio market is our long strong heritage.
David Marzetti (longtime local radio personality and emcee) and KMBY Vice President said, "We concentrate on our music and specialty programs for the Central Coast. The fact that we aren't owned by a large radio group based outside the area means that we can lend ourselves out to support local causes and nonprofits, along with developing strategies to market local businesses."
