Urban One President/CEO Alfred Liggins inks an extension to remain with the company. The new deal runs through December 31 and contains automatic one-year renewals, according to Inside Audio Marketing. His annual salary is $1.25 million, however, with bonuses he could make over $4 million. Liggins, 59, has served as President of Radio One since 1989 and CEO since 1997.
Liggins' mother -- Cathy Liggins Hughes -- founded the company in 1980 after purchasing WOL-AM in Washington DC, hosting an Urban Talk format and laying the foundation for what would become Radio One. A couple of years later she acquired nine additional radio stations, totaling ten stations. In the 1990s, Hughes became the first Black woman to chair a publicly held corporation while expanding Radio One with the accumulation of 60 different gospel, urban and talk radio stations, with her son Alfred as her business partner.
Radio One grew to include TV One, a linear cable network, in 2004. iOne Digital, formerly known as Interactive One, was launched in 2007. Now Radio One, is a subsidiary of Urban One, Inc., the parent company of iOne, One Solution, Radio One, Reach Media and TV One.
