Dick Summer, a revered figure in Boston radio, has died at age 89 due to pneumonia. Summer was best known for hosting the overnight show "Nightlight" on WBZ-AM and had an extensive career in both Boston and New York. WBZ announced his passing on May 14, noting his significant influence on the airwaves during the 1960s and 1970s.
Born in Brooklyn in 1935, Summer was captivated early on by radio legends such as William B. Williams of WNEW-AM in New York. He would later become a morning host at WNEW-FM when it adopted a Progressive Album-Oriented Rock format under Metromedia.
Summer's radio journey began at WNRC in New Rochelle, NY, followed by roles at WROW-AM in Albany, NY, and television broadcasting at WTEN-TV in the Capital District. In 1957, he joined WNHC-AM in New Haven, where he met future WABC star Dan Ingram, before heading to WIBC in Indianapolis to host "Summertime."
At WBZ-AM, Summer's "Nightlight" became known for its poetic readings, humor and unique segments like "Nightlight Password." He also initiated "Nightlighters Against Gutlessness," encouraging public vigilance and responsibility.
Following his tenure at WBZ, Summer briefly returned to WNEW, then moved to WMEX in Boston as Program Director in 1969, where he developed the show "Lovin Touch." He rejoined WBZ in 1971 and later worked at WPLJ-FM, WNBC-AM and WYNY-FM in New York.
A celebration of Dick Summer's life is scheduled for May 16 from 12-4pm at michaelsharborside.com.
