"Today we mourn the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Juan Velasco, afternoon on-air host, 92.3 KRST Country and a much-loved Albuquerque radio personality for 42 years, who passed away on Saturday, July 27 at the age of 60. Juan is survived by two sons, Juan III and Gabriel. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the halls of these Cumulus Media Albuquerque radio stations. Juan Velasco, a native of Alamogordo, NM, began his radio career in his hometown and later worked at a radio station in Las Cruces. He joined KRST-FM 30 years ago, where he became a staple of Albuquerque radio. Velasco spent most of his time at KRST anchoring the middays before transitioning to afternoons in 2017. His voice became synonymous with Albuquerque's airwaves, bringing joy and entertainment to countless listeners.

In addition to his radio career, Velasco was briefly the weekend meteorologist for KOAT-TV and ran a successful event DJ and hosting business, making him a well-known figure across the Land of Enchantment. His contributions to the community extended far beyond the studio, as he was a beloved presence at many local events and gatherings.

The loss of Juan Velasco is deeply felt by his colleagues at Cumulus Media Albuquerque and by the many listeners who grew up with his voice on the radio. His legacy in the industry and his impact on the community will not be forgotten.
