"Historical Records," a new podcast blending the worlds of hip-hop and history, is set to launch on September 27. The project is a collaboration between Story Pirates' Benjamin Salka and Lee Overtree, co-executive produced by Story Pirates Studios, Questlove's Two One Five Entertainment and Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman. The program will be available on the iHeartRadio app and other platforms where podcasts are distributed.
Story Pirates Co-Founder and CEO Benjamin Salka, who is also Co-Executive Producer of Historical Records, said, "This new podcast series melds history with hip-hop, energizing each narrative with our collective creativity and insight." He emphasized the importance of Questlove's musical contributions and Glickman's guidance in making historical storytelling resonate with modern audiences.
Hosted by Story Pirates alum and Broadway actress Nimene Wureh, the podcast will feature under-celebrated historical figures across social change, science, sports, and the arts. Each episode reimagines these stories into original hip-hop tracks, followed by discussions between children aged 8-14 and notable contemporary figures in the relevant fields.
Co-Executive Producer Lee Overtree added, "By focusing on under-celebrated heroes such as Ida Tarbell, Josh Gibson, Keith Haring, and Bill Russell, we aim to cultivate a deep sense of possibility, inspiring listeners to think big and blaze bold new paths," Overtree said.
Special guests on the podcast will include prominent figures such as Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, former NBA player Jalen Rose, author Roxane Gay, CNN journalist Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and artist Shepard Fairey, among others. New episodes will be released every Friday.
