Wondery has unveiled its latest true crime franchise, "Criminal Attorney," with its first season focusing on the notorious rise and fall of defense attorney Paul Bergrin. The series, which follows in the footsteps of popular Wondery hits like Dr. Death and Over My Dead Body, will explore tales of legal corruption and courtroom scandals involving attorneys who have manipulated justice. The show will release new episodes every Monday.
The inaugural season, hosted by Brandon "Jinx" Jenkins, follows former bank manager turned FBI agent Shawn Brokos as she navigates the dangerous criminal underworld in Newark, New Jersey. While investigating drug dealing, racketeering, and murder, Brokos uncovers a shocking connection: one of the main culprits is a defense attorney named Paul Bergrin. Known for his high-profile clientele, including Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim, and figures involved in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse case, Bergrin's reputation began to unravel as his criminal activities came to light. Convicted in 2013, Bergrin has been labeled "the craziest, most evil lawyer in the history of New Jersey."
Jenkins, a journalist and podcast host, brings his experience from projects like RapCaviar, Mogul and The Conviction of Max B to this new series. Speaking about the show, Jenkins highlighted the ethical dilemmas the story raises: "What's most fascinating to me about the evolution of true crime are the exciting stories that make you reevaluate the often blurry lines about what is right and what is wrong, both within and beyond the scope of the law."
"Criminal Attorney" is produced by Wondery.
