The Cleveland Browns community and its fans are in mourning following the death of Jim Donovan, affectionately known as "The Voice of the Cleveland Browns," who has died at the age of 68. After a battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Donovan's passing marks the end of an era for Browns' enthusiasts and the larger sports broadcasting world.
Donovan's voice has been synonymous with Browns football since 1999, when he took on the role of play-by-play announcer as the team returned from a three-year hiatus. Over 25 seasons, his calls have become legendary, capturing some of the most pivotal moments in Browns' history with a passion that resonated deeply with fans.
His notable calls included the exhilarating "Run, William, run" during RB William Green's 64-yard touchdown in 2002, and the memorable "Is this how it feels?" during the Browns' first win in nearly two years in 2018. His final call, celebrating the Browns' return to the playoffs in 2023, epitomized the joy he brought to his role.
Donovan's impact extended beyond the microphone. In September 2024, he was inducted into the Browns Legends, recognizing not just his voice, but his spirit and dedication. His battle with leukemia was public, first diagnosed in 2000, with Donovan openly sharing his challenges and treatments with fans, fostering a deep bond with the community.
Beyond the Browns, Donovan was a cornerstone at WKYC, where his career spanned nearly four decades. His versatility shone through various roles, from local sports anchor to national broadcaster covering major events like the Olympics and the World Cup.
His colleagues remember him as a consummate professional who balanced authenticity with a relentless positivity, earning him numerous accolades including three Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards and induction into multiple halls of fame.
Arrangements for celebrating his life are currently being finalized, and he is survived by his wife Cheryl, and daughter Meghan, who along with countless fans and friends, mourn the loss of a Cleveland icon.
