WBAI-FM/New York Appoints Rebecca Myles as News Director

WBAI-FM/New York names Rebecca Myles as its new News Director, effective immediately. A veteran multimedia journalist, Myles returns to the Pacifica Radio outlet with extensive experience in independent journalism across radio, television, and digital media. Myles has previously contributed to major media outlets, including BBC World Service, Latin Post, Mint Press, RT America, and WBAI Pacifica Radio.

"I return to WBAI with excitement and caution," Myles said. "Excitement at returning to reporting and leading the news department, which is my career foundation and which I cherish, but I caution over the devastation of news and its value. Like many media institutions, WBAI's future is threatened by competition and market trends. Its independence, however, is a strength in a media world that is siloed and run by large corporations and oligarchs who can censor and obfuscate."

Myles highlighted the station's role in fostering open dialogue and diverse perspectives, referencing Pacifica Foundation founder Lewis Hill's vision. "Lewis Hill, the founder of Pacifica, wanted the network to engage in any activity to create a lasting understanding between nations and people," she said. "WBAI is in a unique position to create a return to debate and the free exchange of ideas, for listening and reflection, and to encompass all views as part of a dynamic, rich human family."

Myles has also been actively involved in training interns and volunteers in the newsroom. She is a member of the Newswomen's Club of New York and serves as Vice President of the U.S. chapter of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television, an organization with 14 global chapters and consultative status at the United Nations.
