Former President Donald Trump has appointed Westwood One conservative commentator and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Trump announced the decision on social media, calling Bongino "a man of incredible love and passion for our Country." Bongino will serve under Kash Patel, who was recently confirmed as FBI director.
Bongino, 50, previously worked in law enforcement as a New York City police officer before joining the U.S. Secret Service. He was part of the presidential protection detail for George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Following the announcement, Bongino expressed his gratitude on X, writing, "Thank you, Mr. President, Attorney General Bondi, and Director Patel."
Trump also noted that Bongino is "willing and prepared to give up" his podcast in order to take on the FBI role. "Fairness, Justice, Law, and Order will be brought back to America, and quickly," Trump stated.
Bongino has been a prominent media figure, hosting "The Dan Bongino Show," a syndicated radio program, as well as a popular podcast. He has also previously run for Congress three times.
Cumulus Media, which syndicates Bongino's radio program through Westwood One, released a statement congratulating him on his appointment: "We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dan Bongino on his decision to take on the role of Deputy Director of the FBI. Dan has entertained and informed tens of millions of listeners every day, and we are grateful for our successful partnership. We look forward to welcoming Dan back in the future.
"We truly value our audience, advertisers, and affiliates and remain dedicated to bringing them the next exciting chapter for this programming soon. Dan's last show will be Friday, March 14."
Bongino has been a key figure in conservative media. In September 2023, Westwood One extended its contract with him to continue hosting both his syndicated radio program and his podcasts under the Cumulus Podcast Network. His show debuted in May 2021 with 115 stations and has since grown to 356 affiliates, airing in nine of the top 10 U.S. markets.
