101.9 The Mix Celebrates 33nd Annual Chicago River Day

WTMX (101.9 The Mix) in Chicago teamed up with Friends of the Chicago River this past Saturday for the annual Chicago River Day, bringing station staff and listeners together to support the cleanup and restoration of the city's vital waterway ahead of the summer season.

The event, held at LaBagh Woods, was part of a month-long initiative led by Morning MIX hosts Chris Petlak, Nikki, and Whip, who encouraged listeners to volunteer alongside the station team. Volunteers helped remove litter and invasive plant species to support wildlife habitat restoration along the Chicago River.

"Chicago River Day is one of the most effective community service days of the year, and our partnership with The Mix significantly enhanced our reach and impact," said Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River. "With support from The Mix, we expanded litter cleanup and restoration efforts to 92 sites along the 156-mile Chicago-Calumet River system and engaged more than 2,700 volunteers, making this the biggest Chicago River Day ever since we established it 33 years ago."

Friends of the Chicago River has been working since 1979 to improve the health of the river system for people, plants, and animals. Their ongoing efforts aim to transform the river into a clean, accessible corridor of open space for all to enjoy.
