iHeartMedia has announced the launch of Afterlives: Marsha P. Johnson, the latest season of its documentary podcast series spotlighting the lives and legacies of influential transgender individuals. Produced by The Outspoken Podcast Network, the new season debuts Tuesday, June 10, and is hosted by journalist and activist Raquel Willis.
Building on the success of its debut season, which focused on Layleen Polanco, Afterlives will now turn its attention to the iconic Marsha P. Johnson. A pioneering figure in LGBTQ history, Johnson is often credited with playing a key role in the 1969 Stonewall uprising, a defining moment in the gay rights movement. Through rare archival interviews, unreleased audio, and new conversations with queer elders, historians, and Johnson's friends, the podcast aims to provide an intimate and nuanced portrait of Johnson's life.
"In a time of increasing political attacks on the transgender community, it is important for us to set the record straight on our historical titans like Marsha P. Johnson," said Willis. "This new season of Afterlives will give us a chance to learn more about the complex human life behind the legend of her contributions."
The series will explore Johnson's resilience in the face of poverty, violence, and marginalization, as well as the joy and defiance that marked her activism. Johnson, often referred to as "The Saint of Christopher Street," died under mysterious circumstances in 1992. More than three decades later, her influence remains powerful.
The season will also include commentary from LGBTQ advocates Miss Major and Randy Wicker, as well as artist and author Tourmaline and G.L.I.T.S. founder Ceyenne Doroshow. In the premiere episode, "The Saint of Christopher Street," Willis will reflect on her own connection to LGBTQ history while examining Marsha's enduring legacy through conversations with those who knew her best.
Afterlives: Marsha P. Johnson will be available on the iHeartRadio app and all major podcast platforms. The show is part of iHeartMedia's Outspoken Podcast Network, which aims to amplify diverse voices within the LGBTQ community.
