A new commentary by Mike Henry, CEO of Paragon, argues that the loss of federal and state support for public broadcasting marks both a crisis and an opportunity for the industry.
In his post, Henry notes that while the elimination of government funding will cause hardship for stations, staff, listeners, and nonprofit partners, it also frees public media from political influence. "Public media's shackles are off. That's a good thing," he writes, adding that local missions - not ratings or revenue - should guide the future.
Henry urges stations to broaden their focus, embracing inclusivity while ensuring fact-based, balanced reporting that reflects diverse viewpoints. He also calls for stronger community building beyond content alone, with outreach that engages all parts of the local population.
Though the financial impact will be painful, Henry argues that public media can emerge stronger by prioritizing local needs over external pressures. As he concludes: "If that happens, then mission accomplished."
